We all experience architecture without even thinking about it. The space that surrounds us, our homes, our schools, and our cities are all shaped in some way by architectural design. Let’s challenge our ideas, explore, and design an inhabitable space through this hands-on online course that cultivates creativity, critical analysis, and ideas development. During this two-week course, students will be introduced to the qualities of architectural space, form, function, and materiality through drawing, experimentation, and specialist workshop demonstrations. Each student will have the chance to design their own liveable space using a range of techniques like sketching, collage, technical drawing, paper folding, and 3D modeling in a variety of media and scales.

Architecture & Design

This course introduces students to the disciplines of architecture and design. Classwork includes studying Classical to 19th-Century architecture, sketching from slides, and creating several models that are displayed during the Summer Arts Festival. A required weekend trip takes the class to Basel, Ronchamp, and Weil-am-Rhein to explore the renowned Vitra Museum. This course makes use of a purpose-built architecture studio on campus and is taught by Master Teacher Mark Aeschliman.

Computer Programming for Beginners: Python (Online)

Python 3 is one of the most used and powerful programming languages. It is an easy and user-friendly language to use to create apps, games, software, etc. This course introduces the basics of programming and Python, including variables, conditional execution, and iteration as control structures. The course has no prerequisites, so no prior programming knowledge or experience is needed, regardless of the student’s age. The students will attend small online lectures, participate in lots of hands-on exercises, and watch short videos about the history of computers, coding, Raspberry Pi, and Arduino. Geometry (Online)

This course provides a thorough foundation in plane Euclidean geometry with an emphasis on the formal nature of definition, the structure of knowledge, and inductive and deductive reasoning. An introduction to trigonometry through similar triangles and analytic geometry through the coordinate plane is included, along with a review of basic Algebra. A full year’s study of Geometry will be covered at an accelerated pace. This course is suitable for all students 14-17 years old, especially those who have completed Algebra I and aspire to enroll in Algebra 2 in the coming academic year. All students will have the opportunity to complete a comprehensive exam, and academic credit for the course will be granted to successful students. Course text: Geometry (pub. IB Math Revision (Online)

Part 1

This course is aimed at students who will be entering their second year of the IB Diploma Programme. It will revisit the common core topics on Algebra, Functions, Trigonometry and introduction to Differentiation covered in the first year of the IB Diploma Mathematics courses (AA and AI). It will reinforce skills necessary for both the Standard and the Higher-level students through practice work specially designed for each group. Consideration will be given to using the Graphics Display Calculator which is an integral tool for the IB Mathematics courses. Finally, some time will be devoted to the Mathematics Exploration, which is the Internal Assessment component.

Part 2

This course is designed for students who will be entering their second year of the IB Diploma Programme and they need to revise and work in depth in the common parts of Trigonometry, Differentiation and elements of Statistics and Probability. It is appropriate for the students taking HL of both the IB Diploma Mathematics courses (AA and AI) but also for the ones who wish to excel in SL. Good knowledge of the common core topics on algebra and functions will be presumed, (these are covered in the Math review TESP course offered in the first session). Content might be adjusted according to the student needs. The course is aiming to help students develop logical & creative thinking, patience & persistence in problem-solving and to inspire confidence in using mathematics. Spanish (Online)

Spanish Beginners 

This is an introductory course which is intended for students with little or no prior experience in Spanish. All four language skills (reading, writing, listening and speaking) are emphasised and developed simultaneously. Topics of study focus on everyday situations of practical utility. Developing a sound knowledge of basic grammar is an essential component of this course. A variety of readings, videos and websites are used to promote an interest in the Ibero-Hispanic World.

Spanish Intermediate

Spanish 2-3-4 continues to enhance the four basic language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students will learn to engage in more complex conversations due to a greatly expanded knowledge of verb tenses (preterit, imperfect, future, conditional, imperative mood and subjunctive), grammar, and topical vocabulary. Written homework, pictures, skits, oral drills, readings, workbook exercises, audio/video material, film, short and long dialogue, theatre, and visits to Spanish language websites will be used to achieve this aim. In addition, the geography, history, and culture of Spain and Hispanic America will be discussed to give students an understanding of the more than five hundred million people who speak this beautiful and useful language.

STEAM (Online)

This 2-weeks online STEAM course integrates concepts that are usually taught as separate subjects and emphasizes the application of knowledge to real-life situations. A lesson or unit in a STEAM class is typically based on finding a solution and connection to a real-world problem through project-based learning. The class will follow the basics of the 21st Century STEAM challenge: Describe the Problem, Research and Gather Information, Think of and Develop Possible Solutions, Select the Best Possible Solution(s), Virtually “Construct” the Device, Test and Evaluate, Redesign/Modify and Complete, Final Test. Throughout this course, students will examine different components that shape their past, present, and future in topics such as Electronics & Embedded Systems, Coding & Programming, 3D Modelling and 3D design.

Every student will get an engineering kit which consists of a variety of electronic components such as LEDs, servo motors, resistors etc. along with a microcontroller and access to an online platform. This is a project-based learning experience. Students will find themselves working individually as well as a member of a group with minimum on-screen time.

A worldwide verified official certificate issued by Arduino Education will be given to the students upon successful completions which can be sent back to their schools. The certificate can be also used for college applications giving the candidate an extra advantage to secure a position in one of the highly ranked universities around the world.

This two-week literacy and earth discovery course will begin by reading the book Walk Two Moons written by award-winning Sharon Creech, former TASIS English and writing teacher. While exploring themes of self identify, hope, and global awareness, students will begin to develop their own self story. We will explore geographical concepts with Google Earth Education resources to incorporate hands-on and virtual activities.
